The reports have revealed that Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has been told by the La Liga side that meet £28.5million offer is enough to take their star in the transfer window.

United have been planning for £16million offer for the Uruguayan but now it seems that they will take a step back in their pursuit.

The 28-year-old has been in fine form for the past few years. The Spanish media has already reported that Atletico are not willing to sell their star defender but if anyone can match his buy-out clause then they can have him.

United have been in continuously struggling in their defensive areas, majority of defenders are still out with injuries. Right-back Rafael, Centre-backs Phil Jones and Jonny Evans and summer signing Luke Shaw are still struggling with their injury problems.

While Dortmund star Mats Hummels and Aston Villa skipper Ron Vlaar both have been linked with a move heavily with the Old Trafford side.

Hummels and Vlaar are also targeted by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger for the winter transfer window. Also, Serie A side Napoli recently joined the race to sign Vlaar.
