Former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp believes that Liverpool would have qualified for Champions League next stage if they had Daniel Sturridge in their line-up.
Liverpool suffered a Champion League blow as they failed to qualify for the round of 16 with a draw against Swiss side FC Basel last night.
Liverpool played with 10 men as Lazar Markovic was red carded in the start of the second half. Despite of it, Liverpool were enough capable of scoring the equalizer, thanks to skipper Steven Gerrard for the wonderful free-kick.
The former Reds expressed his opinion that Liverpool once again failed in front of goals. It would have been a different situation if they had Sturridge.
The English striker has been continuously suffering injuries. In a period of four months, he is suffering his third injury and is expected to be back in January. He has made only three appearances for Liverpool this season.
Redknapp told DailyMail: “Where I do have sympathy for them is Daniel Sturridge. If Daniel Sturridge plays, Liverpool win that.”
“The Suarez exit shows just how good that fella is, because he transcended that whole team and the club, and the players around him.”
Simply, Suarez departure had to give Liverpool a blow and they are currently facing it in every competition.
Redknapp further added: “But the players who have come in have to do a lot better.”
Liverpool current strikers Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini all have failed to prove. Currently, Balotelli is also out with an injury while Lambert is the first choice striker. Lambert has scored two goals in 18 appearances for Liverpool.
