The
Real Madrid veteran stopper has also revealed that he decided to stay so that
he can fight for his place at Santiago Bernabeu.
Casillas
struggled last season as Diego Lopez was the first choice keeper in La Liga and
now he seems to have taken his place back and has started 11 games so far this
season in all competitions.
The
Spaniard maintained place for his country Spain in the World Cup despite of
having limited time last term in La Liga but he played the European
games and lifted the tenth Champions League trophy for Madrid.
Casillas
told the Canal Plus: “I thought about going, what you want is for Real Madrid
to always win. But in the end, at 33-years-of age, you think, why should I
(go)?”
He
told that at the age of 33 it was useless to leave such a big club for just
playing time. It was better to fight rather to leave. As he said: “I want to
fight, to make a go of it, to be reborn from the ashes.”
“There
was a lot of talk about an offer from Arsenal, but there was nothing concrete.
I want to stay at Real Madrid, keep fighting here and finish my career here.”
Despite
of playing for Madrid since his childhood, he still has a desire to play away
from Spain.
He
added: “I would like to have some experience abroad before retiring.”
Casillas has been playing for Real Madrid since childhood. Currently, play his 16th season. The 33-year-old has played more than 650 games since 1999.
