Last
season, Stevan Jovetic was brought in to Etihad with high hopes. A staggering
fee of £22million was paid to bring in the Montenegrin Striker from
Fiorentina. But it was a season to forget for Jovetic. He only made five starts in
all competitions. His playing time was highly limited due to long term injuries
and illness. He scored only 3 Premier League Goals in his first season in
English Soil. Having spent majority of last season on sidelines, luck was
opposite to Jovetic’s side. His injuries were without deadlines. He even
suffered from food poisoning before a match. Even in two of those matches in
which he was used as substitute, he had to take off for carrying yet another
injury. It was considered that his career at Etihad is over before it even
starts properly. His injury woes suggested that he might be a new Owen Hargreaves in
the making. But in all those hard times, Manchester City Boss Manuel Pellegrini stood by his signing. Even
in this year transfer window, when Clubs tried to persuade Jovetic away from
Etihad, it was Pellegrini who rejected to sell the Montenegrin Striker.

It seems as now Jovetic is returning all that faith put on him by his manager in a best possible way. He enjoyed an excellent pre-season in which he scored two goals each against AC Milan and Liverpool FC. So he started this league campaign with full form. In the absence of Argentine Kun Aguero, Jovetic gets a chance to play for more than 65 minutes for the first time in his Manchester City career. And he makes full use of it. After showing an impressive display against Newcastle United, City’s next opponents were Liverpool. And Jovetic hit Liverpool like a storm. He scored two goals against the Merseyside Club helping his team to grab an easy 3-1 win against the runners up from last season. Jovetic was unstoppable and Liverpool defenders found it very difficult to mark him. He was easily the Man of the Match for his heroics against Liverpool.
So
Jovetic after suffering a dismal last season, started this with the best
possible manner. Still only 24, Jovetic has all the attributes to become one of
the World’s most lethal strikers in the future. If he stays fit, he’ll be
difficult to handle for opposing defenders. It seems Manchester City was right
to keep this flop from last season. He will be like a new signing to Manchester
City and alongside Aguero, he’ll only excel in the future.
