Chelsea yesterday announced that they have
successfully signed Nemanja Matic from Benfica. The fee is reportedly in the
region of £20 million.
Matic left Chelsea for the Portuguese side in 2011 as
part of David Luiz deal due to lack of time on the field. He played only three games for Chelsea in his 1st spell.
The question is that did Chelsea really need a
midfielder?
Chelsea have lot of midfielders including Frank Lampard,
Michael Essien, Ramires, and John Mikel Obi.
While their Brazilian center back David Luiz can also
play as a midfielder. So if you count Chelsea have now 5 midfielders including
Matic (not counting Luiz as a midfielder).
Even Chelsea fans are saying that they didn’t need a
midfielder. The problem is with strikers but Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho recently
told that he will not sign any striker in this transfer window as he has showed
his faith in Spaniard Fernando Torres. The Portuguese manager is confident on
Torres that he will continue his goal scoring streak.
Matic might be Lampard's replacement?
Yes, the Serbian player might have rejoined Chelsea in
order to take place of Lampard who is 35-year-old.
Another point of signing him is that Essien has been
linked to AC Milan according to rumours. While Mikel is not at his best this
season.
Matic is a good holding midfielder, has good passing
skills and is good in physical challenges as he is 6 ft 4 in. The
25-year-old will probably not be playing in the coming Chelsea’s fixture
against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on this Sunday.
But still who would he replace?
