The reports have revealed Arsenal's interest in the Englishman in the past also, but further claims that they are likely to make a bid to secure his services for the next season.

The North London side are also keeping tabs on Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund who is also eyed by Manchester United. Hummels is likely to join the Red Devils which means that Arsenal can easily get Smalling.

Also, Gunners German centre-back Per Mertesacker is likely to leave Emirates Stadium in the summer with Daily Mirror further reported that a new defender could be Arsenal’s first summer signing.

Arsenal are planning to make a £12 million bid for Smalling who is likely to be offered a new deal by the Red Devils in the near future but he is likely to reject the deal. His current contract has a year left.

Arsene Wenger tried to sign him prior to his move to United from Fulham but failed and he joined United for £10 million fee.

The 25-year-old centre-half has started only 14 Premier League games so far this term.
