Let’s look at some of the big fees being paid for defenders.

1: David Luiz
After a disastrous World Cup campaign behind him that was epitomized by a 7-0 thrashing against the mighty Germans, David Luiz moved to his new club Paris Saints Germain from Chelsea. However, the deal was concluded before the start of the World Cup as PSG in order to fade-off the interest of Barcelona gone over the board to play 50million pounds for the curly haired Brazilian.

2: Thiago Silva
Being a firm target of LA Liga giants Barcelona ever since he put his foot on the European soil, PSG have done very well to fade the interest of any club that has come looking for the gem. A leader in himself who showed his capabilities in this World Cup before being suspended from that fateful defeat against Germany, PSG paid 35million pounds to AC Milan to acquire the services of Brazilian main man.

3: Rio Ferdinand
Back in 2002, when Clubs used to think twice for spending that match money even on an attacker, Sir Alex Ferguson bought Ferdinand from Leeds United for £33million. It turned out to be an extremely prolific deal for both parties as Ferdinand won many piece of silverwares during his time at Manchester United. His price tag also makes him the highest paid signing in the European club football history.

4: Eliaquim Mangala
Former Porto player, now giving his efforts for a blue half in Manchester, Eliaquim Mangala was signed by Manuel Pellegrini side for 32million pounds. Although coming from a side which has a history of getting huge money when their beloved players depart, still the money being paid for a 23-year-old raised certain eye-brows.

5: Luke Shaw
Another Englishman, another Manchester United signing in Luke Shaw makes the top 5 here. Although in terms of price tag he has left legendary figures like Lillian Thuram behind him, it is still to be seen how the 19 year old fits under the formation of 3-5-2 that has never been employed and succeeded at the same time in England before.
